Is there really an orginal idea in Sci Fi?

dovil was taking a Poll over on her LiveJournal (and I'd link to it but she's taken it down already!) asking if there is a correlation between fiction and reality. Sorry if I'm paraphrasing Dovil!

It got me thinking about the topic and then the relationship between reality and Sci Fi.

Some of our great inventions I have no doubt were created by Trekkie fans decades ago. And the trend will continue as the influence of Sci Fi stories and technology continue.

But have we started to run out of ideas? I'm noticing how often that I'm muttering to myself while watching a new episode of any Sci Fi show, "This reminds me of that *insert name of Sci Fi show* episode".

Take Supernatural. The millisecond that Ruby was shown on screen I thought "It's a Buffy copy". And a pretty reasonable assumption I thought. Let's look at the comparisons:
1. She's wearing leather!
2. She fights in high heels
3. She has blonde hair
4. Handy with a weapon or two
5. She kicks demon arse.

They added the twist that she was the actual demon. So I guess she is really some morph of Buffy and Angel. She's a Bangel.
Sounds less like a superhero and more like an illiterate member of an 80's girl rock band.

So have we run out of ideas?

With so many fanficers out there and the Writers of shows being barred from reading it, do the legalities of it all now make it difficult for writer's to come up with new ideas as there might be the risk of a fanfic writer who thought of a trip to another world in the Pegasus Galaxy involved visiting a tropical paradise, full of semi-naked women, with no inhibitions and the wackiness that ensued so they can never do that show. Instead, more rocks and trees.

Personally I'd rather a world of John Sheppard's in bikini's... no, that's just all wrong. *shudder*

I wrote this before my morning installment of caffeine so I may just return to this post later and delete it... or at least make it comprehendable.

Buffy to visit Atlantis?

Now that I have your attention with that title I'll go on to say that it is a complete work of fiction but a topic I thought could be open to discussion.

While lying in bed last night wondering when the hell I was going to get to sleep, for some reason this just popped into my head. I'd say it came to me in the hope that the thoughts would send me to sleep. I'm sure that goes against the grain of getting to sleep, but it was worth a try.

Atlantis fandom gets its knickers in a knot when an SG1 character visits. Whether it's a quick visit, such as that of O'Neill, Teal'c and soon Daniel Jackson, or a more permanent resident such as Carter, it seems to make some fans groan and others squee.

Visiting from SG1 to Atlantis is a small puddle jump, but what if we did a full 9th Chevron and had a character like Buffy visit?

Think about it, she'd fit in perfectly.

- She has the super-strength to match Ronon.
- Buffy and Sheppard could compare hair advice
- Teyla I'm sure would enjoy another arse-kicking woman around who is good with sticks
- She has a lot of experience with things that suck the life out of you
and McKay can, well, I can't think of anything that Buffy could add for McKay other than some blonde eye candy... especially now that Carter is gone.

So I ask the question, do-able? Or is there someone more fitting to do a major cross-over from another show.

Questions? Comments?

This Journal Was Empty - Now It's Not

I guess I could just leave it at a subject. After all, seeing as my main aim was to make sure this journal wasn't empty, I have achieved my goal. *nods to self, humbled by efforts so far*

I've heard inviting friends onto your journal can be a mixed blessing; for each great person you meet, there will be those that will make you shut down your journal and create an entire new username.. and abandon your home... with pets still inside. So I'm not sure what to do; to friend or not to friend? Looking for advice on this.

You have to admit, it's all getting a little crazy? Since finding the Sci Fi community in December, I now have accounts for LiveJournal, Blogger, Wordpress (where Joe Mallozzi goes I find I blindly follow), Flickr, Photobucket, just to name a few – it’s insane! As if I didn’t have enough usernames and passwords to remember for work and actually accessing things I really need like bank accounts.

So as I sit here writing for absolutely no one (at least it will reduce the amount of criticism that may be coming my way) I ask, when exactly will we all go, “Yep, I think I’d better get back to work”?
